Teen Leadership Training Program

This grant will support the Teen Leadership Training Program at ROCKS. The program includes community service work, job-training, in-program volunteering and outdoor adventure risk-taking.

"ROCK is committed to supporting the long-term success of the youth in its community, considered one of San Francisco's most violent. Because of the limited resources and programs in the community, ROCK's Teen Leadership Training Program will provide opportunities for youth to participate in positive, challenging activities create a safe learning environment and promote positive relationships between staff, volunteers and their peers. ROCK's programs are made accessible to Visitacion Valley youth by outreaching in neighboring high schools and Recreation and Park facilities.

TLTP focuses on teaching its youth the importance of leadership and empowerment through a combination of outdoor experiential activities, community service and job promotion as follows:

• Outdoor Experiential Activities: Hiking, mountain bike riding and indoor rock climbing activities are designed to train and empower youth to make decisions, problem solve and motivate their peers.
• Volunteerism: TLTP emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community. Youth are exposed to various service projects such as serving food at Glide Memorial Church and volunteering in various ROCK programs throughout the year.
• Job Promotion: TLTP promotes job training by providing its youth with assistant teaching positions in ROCK's after-school programs and as assistant camp counselors for its elementary school summer camp."

"TLTP program will serve 25-30 high school students who live or attend school in Visitacion Valley. TLTP participants are African American, Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander with most coming from disadvantaged backgrounds."
